Is it just us, or does each summer seem to get hotter and hotter?

Due to global warming in recent years, summer seems to be hotter and start much earlier every year.. Both Hong Kong and Taiwan have suffered from the heat recently:

  • Record-breaking heatwave hits Hong Kong for continuously 300 hours in May 2018. This is the highest records since 2000
  • Taiwan records a continuous high temperature – above 35 degree Celsius for 13 days in May 2018 – which breaks 122 years of record!

Everyone seems interested to finding new and more effective ways to keep cool in summer. We ask hundreds of SmartRocket community agents from Hong Kong and Taiwan to record how they keep cool and their opinions on the recent weather.

The findings are not surprising –

  • Most respondents (34% in Hong Kong and 47% in Taiwan) agree that the most effective way is to stay at home and don’t leave unless it is necessary.
  • Consuming cold beverages/ food is the runner up as the way to keep cool in both countries.

Respondents were also asked to take a photo of how they keep cool in summer. Perhaps you can try to find something new from the photos to try.

As you can see from the photos, Hong Kong respondents are quite loyal in using handy mobile fan in summer while Taiwan respondents will use slightly different ways to keep cool!

Most respondents agree that the world is getting hotter now and seems like humans are causing it. As global warming is expected to have far-reaching, long-lasting and devastating consequences for the Earth, we should all do our part to stop it and you can take the following as reference ( Source from https://www.nrdc.org/stories/how-you-can-stop-global-warming):

  • Speak up! – Share your concerns to your friends and family to increase awareness
  • Energy efficient home – Try not to use heater or air-conditioning too frequently and try to invest in energy-efficient appliances
  • Reduce water waste – This can be done easily in your daily life, e.g. take shorter showers, turn off the tap while brushing teeth, and switch to WaterSense-labeled fixtures and appliances.
  • Actually eat the food you buy and make less of it meat – A lot of energy use goes into growing, processing, packaging, and shipping food and many food end up in the landfill eventually. Since livestock products are among the most resource-intensive to produce, eating meat-free meals can make a significant difference too.
  • Buy better bulbs – LED lightbulbs use up to 80 percent less energy than conventional incandescent. They are also cheaper in the long run. So why not?
  • Pull the plugs – Don’t leave fully charged devices plugged into your home’s outlets, unplug rarely used devices, and adjust your computers and monitors to automatically power down to the lowest power mode when not in use.

We only have one Earth, there is no Planet B! We can all take action now before it is too late!

Leave your comment and share with us what do you usually do to stop global warming in your daily life!
